Presented by IF Maitland Indie Festival and Art Fest
IF Maitland Indie Festival and Art Fest is on from 21 October to 30 October 2022. The Family Fun day will be on Sunday 23 October in Sun Street — right outside our studio! We're having a celebration of Adventure Unlocked authors at 1pm, followed by a Mythical Magical Creative Writing Workshop from 2pm - 4pm in the studio.

In ancient Ireland, there lived a race of magical supernatural beings called the Tuatha de Danann—a bit like the elves in The Lord of the Rings. Some say they arrived in Ireland on flying ships made of mist and fog. Others say they rode in on dark storm clouds. After a battle with the terrible Fir Bolg tribes and the Sons of Mil, who came from over the stormy seas, the Tuatha de Danann retreated to live deep inside the earth.

In our creative writing workshop, we’re going on a journey into the earth to meet these marvellous beings. What do they look like? Where do they live? What happens when you visit their magical world? Get ready to write all about it.

All participants will receive pen, paper, inspiration, snacks and a FREE copy of Emerald Child by Karen Hughes.

Karen is a fabulous teacher! Our boy loved every moment of these workshops. He had so much fun and no idea was ever seen as a bad one. His handwriting and writing skills improved tremendously. His imagination and ability to describe and create have developed alongside his confidence. Thank you for a fantastic year!

Unlock a world of adventure with this wild and wonderful collection of stories written and edited by our talented kids — with a little help from author Karen Hughes. From time travel to space diaries, dragon quests to friendly zombies, there's something in here for everyone.

We're so proud of our young authors! Most of these stories and poems were written during lockdown by creative kids who zoomed with Karen from all over Australia.

We acknowledge the Wonnarua people, Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gather in the Hunter Valley, and pay our respects to their Elders, past and present. We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the Hunter Valley today. Anikanya!

Karen Hughes is the author of the popular Kalika Magic series for kids 9+, exploring themes of courage, adventure and the power of the imagination. Karen grew up on a cattle station on the Liverpool Plains, where she spent her childhood climbing trees, riding horses and reading Narnia books. She attended a primary school with only six pupils, before being packed off to boarding school at age twelve. Karen has been a lawyer, a herbalist and a web designer, but being an author is her favourite job. She has just finished writing a science fiction novel for her PhD in English and is currently working on her fifth Kalika Magic book.
