We hurried to the kitchen, ducking under the kitchen archway. Mr Scott balanced on a stool and reached for the cure, which rested on the high shelf.
“Drink this now. You have thirty seconds.”
Catching the cure and thrusting the liquid down my throat, I threw the cure to Nathan, who did the same. I felt it in my stomach; it burnt my organs. I felt like my body was being turned inside out, until my head felt light and my feet felt heavy, and that’s when everything went dark.
“Evie! Wake up!” Nathan’s voice, not high but deep, sounded from above me. I yawned and ran my hand through my hair.
Hair.
My eyes shot open, and I saw Nathan grinning at me. He was back to normal.
“Am I a kangaroo?” I said quickly and looked around. We were on the floor of my lounge, lost in the sea of pillows and sleeping bags. Erwin and Steph were sound asleep beside me, and Olive and Cassy were on their phones, back against the couch, chatting.
“What?” Cassy giggled, looking up from her phone and raising an eyebrow. “Did you two do the dare last night? We passed out before you got back.”
“Nah, all the doors were locked, so we decided to get ice cream,” Nathan said quickly. Never thought Nathan could lie so well.
I held the sleeping bag over my face and smiled. Yes, we were safely back home.
Olive’s face changed as she swiped on her phone, “OMG guys, Mr Scott finally died!”
“Really?” Cassy looked over Olive’s shoulder as I pulled the sleeping bag off me and hurried towards them. “About time.”
“Yeah …” I said, and shared a sad little sigh with Nathan.
