Haiku 俳句 in Lockdown

Haiku is a type of short form poetry originally from Japan. Traditional Japanese haiku consist of three phrases containing a total of 17 syllables in a 5, 7, 5 pattern and a kigo 季語 (seasonal) reference. Our Zoom kids were inspired to write their own haiku this week, with a bit of help from Ricky Baker (Hunt for the Wilderpeople).

Swooping season here.

Magpies come down to attack.

They are protecting.

Archer

The afternoon breeze:

soft cold air kisses my face,

dead leaves follow me.

Alyssa

The tree is light brown.

The leaves are gone, bare it is.

It cries for cover.

Keisha

The sad moon shines so.

A snake hisses hungrily.

There is now bird food.

Milly

The sun rises.

The morning birds always chirp.

The morning has life.

Aaliyah

The tree is barren,

the tree is about to die.

The tree is cut down.

Phoenix

Blanketed in white.

Gentle, beautiful, silent.

Snowflakes fall slowly.

Alyssa

No one likes plovers,

mostly because they swoop you.

Don’t touch their babies.

Erika

An angry beast growls.

He hurtles towards his prey,

but the bird flies free.

Keira

Sienna

You play instruments:

guitars, pianos and flutes.

My favourite is flutes.

James

The dolphin jumps in,

in the dangerous ocean.

It is very brave.

Phoenix

Flowers are pretty.

Erika loves to pick them, though

she really hates bees.

Erika

Wet rain covers land.

A bird ruffles his feathers.

Rain does not stop fast.

Milly

Sitting in flowers

during spring, blooming galore.

Spring day just rising.

Keira

There once was a tree.

It grew near a pond with fish.

That tree grew so well.

Max

I was told to leave.

I knew I had to say bye.

The rest left to die.

Evie

Standing in mist.

The light flickers.

She is here.

Aaliya

I have a story

about a beautiful town

found below the stars.

Keira

The first day of Spring.

Blossoming, blooming flowers.

Evening sunset.

Archer

Small white butterfly

fluttering in the garden,

flies away with grace.

Alyssa

Undead never die.

They go on for all of life,

never say goodbye.

Max

Dogs are the best pets,

but cats are very good, too.

Birds are okay, yay!

James

White soft grains of sand.

Waves are crashing on the shore.

Waft of salty air.

Alyssa

Very empty streets.

Lots of zombies here. I’m safe

but I’m very sad.

Phoenix

Just clouds all day.

No shining sun, just grey.

A hippo is stray.

Milly

Winter is over.

No more of the cold.

Spring sunshine is here.

Archer

The bird cried, “Goodnight,

I don’t want to go to bed.”

Never mind, good night.

Evie

Love is beautiful,

though it may only come once,

so you keep it safe.
